We’re constantly striving for good outcomes. We learn that we’re rewarded for success, and punished for failure. But if favorable outcomes are conditional on our worth and effort, the consequences of our possible failures are enormous.

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God affirms that He has a favorable predisposition towards us, His “loving-kindness” (chesed). Christ’s sacrifice guarantees God’s posture towards us. Unlike human favor, God’s favor is unconditional. It depends only on His worthiness to give it—not on our worthiness to receive it.
